Making Exercise Using Hot Potato

 

 
    Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog. 
   In this post I would like to talk more about an application called Hot Potato. Actually, I have ever talked about this application on my previous post. However, I would like to share more on how to make exercise using "Hot Potato". "Hot Potato" is an application that is used to make exercises. Here you will have six types of exercises such as JCross, JMasher, JMix, JMix, and JCloze. You can use one of them or even you can use them all. However you need to download and install the application first, then you can make the exercises. And one important thing, the result of this exercise will be in the form of HTML which means you need to send the HTML file first to your students and ask the to download it first. Then they can do the exercises after they download the HTML files. 
    So now, without further some, let us start the tutorial! 
    First the tutorial of downloading the application. Here are the steps:
  1. Open the website for the application (the link: https://hot-potatoes.id.uptodown.com/windows
  2. Choose the newest version of "Hot Potato". 
  3. Wait until it is downloaded. 
  4. Then install the application on your laptop. 
  5. You write your name for the registration. 
  6. You can directly use the application to make the exercises. 
    Next, let's discuss on how to make the exercise from each exercise types. 
  •     JCloze: The exercise application which helps us to make a fill-in-the-blank questions. Here are the steps:  
  1. Open the application. 
  2. Open the JCloze exercise.
     

  3. Then type the title of the exercise on the top section and the questions below it. In this exercise what you need to do is just write the questions in full sentence since JCloze will help you to delete the word you want to. But now, write the title and questions on the right column. 
     

  4. Then block the word or phrase that you want to delete. 
     

  5. Then click "gap" check the word that is going to be erased and give clues if you want. Then click "ok". 
     

  6. Then click save on the top left of the page. 
     

  7. Then put it as a HTML file. You can directly choose the style of HTML there and you can see how the exercise is looks like. Then you can send the HTML file to your students. Don't forget to ask them to download the HTML file first then they can do the exercise. 
     

  • JCross: The exercise application which can help us to make cross words exercise. Here is the steps on making the cross words exercise: 
  1. Open the "Hot Potato" Application. 
  2. Choose JCross 
     

  3. Write the title of the exercise on the left side and type the words on the right place which has many small boxes. 
     

  4. Block each words to give some clues. Then, after you clock the word, click "add clue". 
     

  5. Then type the clue on the clue section Then click "OK". 
     

  6. Then save on the left side of the application your work so that the file won't be lose and you can edit it. 
     

  7. Last, you need to make it as the HTML file so that your students can save it and do the exercise. Click "Create Web Page" and you can choose the option there to create HTML file. 
     
  • JMatch: the application which can help us to make a matching question. 
  1. Open the application. 
  2. Click "JMatch" 
     

  3. Then type the title on the top, type the question on the left, and the answers on the right. Later on the answer on the right will be jumbled. 
     

  4. Then save the work so that your work won't get lost and you also still can edit it later. Save it on the top left of the application. 
     

  5. After you are finished, you can make the HTML files and share it to your students. In this exercise, you can choose one of the HTML types and the HTML style will also be different for each HTML types. After you make it, you can share the HTML files to your students and ask them to download it. Then, your students can do the exercise. 
     

  • JMix: the application which can help us to make a scrambled questions. 
  1. Open the application. 
  2. Click "JMix" 
     

  3. Type the title on the top and type the questions (in word/sentence) below the title. Type the sentence/word in each other line so that it can be scrambled. 
     

  4. Then save the work so that your work won't get lost and you also still can edit it later. Save it on the top left of the application. 
     

  5. After you are finished, you can make the HTML files and share it to your students. In this exercise, you can choose one of the HTML types and the HTML style will also be different for each HTML types. After you make it, you can share the HTML files to your students and ask them to download it. Then, your students can do the exercise.  
     

  • JQuiz: The application which help us to make multiple question exercise. 
  1. Open the application. 
  2. Choose "JQuiz". 
     

  3. Type the title on the top of the application, the question below it, and the answer with the other options below it. Choose of the option (for the correct answer) and you can write some feedback on each option (you can cheer them up when they choose the wrong answer and you can congratulate them when they choose the correct answer). 
     

  4. Then save on the left side of the application your work so that the file won't be lose and you can edit it.  
     

  5. Then put it as a HTML file. You can directly choose the style of HTML there and you can see how the exercise is looks like. Then you can send the HTML file to your students. Don't forget to ask them to download the HTML file first then they can do the exercise.  
     

  • JMasher: The application which can help us to combine all the files of the exercise of JCloze, JMatch, JMix, JQuiz, and JCross.  
  1. Open the application. 
  2. Click "JMatch". 
     

  3. The click "add files". The files that should be chosen is the "Hot Potato" files. 
     

  4. Then open the "Hot Potato" files which you want to put into one. 
     

  5. Then click "OK to all." 
     

  6. Then click "Build Unit" and wait for a minute. After that the HTML file will be available for you. 
     

    So, that are the exercise which is there in the "Hot Potato" exercise application. I hope that you can use it. Here are my exercise that I've made using "Hot Potato", you can see how is it look like. But don't forget to download the HTML first and then you can see the exercise.
